How to Use?

I didn’t have any of the payment services on my phone and decided to register my card to see which one was easier. Both work almost the same way: for WeChat you input your bank password, use the camera to get your card information and input your phone number for verification. With Apple Pay, you first use the camera to get info from your card and then receive a verification number through SMS and you’re done!

In my experience, Apple Pay was easier and here’s why. After I registered with Apple Pay in 15 seconds I went to try the WeChat service and couldn’t register! It might have been a system mistake - especially because Apple Pay sent me a SMS to the phone number I registered at the bank - but I got two different messages from WeChat and will have to go to the bank to solve this.

But is Apple Pay better when it comes to service?

When it comes to service, you can’t compare Apple Pay with WeChat Wallet and Alipay. Both have been in China longer and developed a lot more services than just “paying for stuff” (like Apple Pay in China, for now).

Alipay and WeChat Wallet, on the other hand, are a lot more than a simple mobile payment service. Not only you can use this services to do what Apple Pay does, but also pay for bills, order and pay for taxis, transfer money to friends (up to 10,000 RMB with no fees charged), send red packets as a present and more.

Point to WeChat and Alipay! Although I still couldn’t register I will make a visit to my bank and solve this out. Let’s just say that if I couldn’t register to Apple Pay it wouldn’t bother me at all.

What about Apple Pay in other countries?

Apple Pay first launched in the United States, with Canada, Britain and Australia following. But do iPhone owners actually use the service in these countries? The answer is not really!

Yes, there are some people using the service, but Apple is still trying to increase the awareness of mobile payment in the initial countries. Is still not common practice and not all places accept this kind of payment.

According to a recent report, the adoption on Apple Pay is slowing down in the U.S. and among those who adopted the service, only 15% report to be using it regularly. This might be one of the big reasons why Apple decided to launch its service in China: at least in big cities, Chinese know the service and have been using it for a while. So it’s an easier market to penetrate because of its awareness, but a hard one because of its strong competitors.

A service made for a few and a few only

Apple pay turned out to be a bit - how can I put this nicely? - “Show Off Pay”. First because the service can only be used by iPhone 6 and up owners. Second, after it launched in China, the internet was abuzz with pictures of people showing off all their “amazing” credit cards.

Apart from that, a lot of people are amazed about Apple Pay’s ability to connect to the Apple Watch - but apart from a privileged few who really owns one? WeChat and Alipay are supported by any phone and don’t show pictures of your cards, rather than just the bank initials  and the 4 final numbers of your card.

Yes, Apple Pay might look cool, like a real wallet, but do you prefer cool or actually being able to use it everywhere, for everything? I thought so, points for WeChat and Alipay!

What to expect from Apple Pay?

As it was mentioned in a previous article, it’s still too soon to know. Although according to local reports, 38 million cards were registered on the first day of Apple Pay in China, the remain question is how much of these will be used. Apple might get a small share of the mobile payment in China, but it might take a while until people adapt, especially when its competitors are a better alternative.

To me, if Apple really wants to be a success in the Chinese market, they need to develop fast and offer more functionality. If not, Apple Pay will be like a one-night stand: people use it every now and then, but it will never be more than that and users will eventually forget about it.

With the advance of technology and with smartphones becoming an extension of our lives, this is an inevitable trend. In 5 years (or maybe a bit longer) we will no longer use cash, the mobile payment will be better developed and there will be a lot more people using it. So the million dollar question is: who will win this race?

2月18日,Apple Pay正式登陆中国,瞬间一石激起千层浪,关于Apple Pay的报道迅速霸占了各大媒体的头版头条,朋友圈更是出现了无敌豪华刷屏大军。那么,关于Apple Pay不同的媒体都有哪些不同的切入角度,效果如何以及有什么借鉴意义呢?

角度一:Apple Pay 来了

在18日Apple Pay正式上线时,充当排头兵的就是这些宣布Apple Pay来了的媒体。虽然只有短短一句话,却足以让大家为之激动不已。这类新闻的内容非常简单,拼的并不是内容而是时间,谁第一个发谁就赢了。这类新闻可以在短时间内吸引大量转发,但是由于内容同质化严重以及缺乏信息加工,很难突出各家媒体自身特色。

角度二:Apple Pay 使用攻略

这类应该是比例最大的了。一般媒体在宣布了Apple Pay来华的消息后,都会附带Apple Pay的使用指南,包括使用条件,如何绑定信用卡,如何在商店使用等等。这类新闻的实用性比较强,会有很多读者点赞、转发和收藏,因为就算用不了Apple Pay也要知道它是怎么回事,万一以后哪天用到了呢。这类新闻比拼的就是解释能力和细致程度,一般来说解释地越清楚、越细致、图片越多,点赞和转发数也就越多。

角度三:Apple Pay 与支付宝、微信支付的对比

中美竞争一直都是一个热门话题,特别是跟科技有关的领域,特别特别是在国人已取得傲人成绩的领域。这类新闻也会提及Apple Pay的一些使用方法,但是更加注重其与国人电子支付方式的不同特点,然后在结尾会做出一个中国消费者更偏向哪一个的预测。但是竞争对比是个良心活儿,既可以简单粗略的对比,也可以深入细致的对比,可靠性当然也就因此不同,自然也就导致了不同的点赞和转发。

角度四:Apple Pay在中美市场的对比

这类对比一般是由外媒写的,或者是关注外国新闻和市场的媒体。虽然看起来比较小众,但是随着国人对于美国市场的好奇和了解不断增长,这类文章一般也能获得一定的转发。

角度五:Apple Pay趋势预测

Apple Pay在中国的第一天可过的不那么顺利。普及不够、门槛较高、绑卡失败、场景缺失、推广不足等等都会成为Apple Pay在华发展的掣肘。当然也有看好Apple Pay的,认为果粉的能量不可小觑。更多时候,问题大于优势,毕竟一个做手机的美国品牌跑来中国做移动支付,跨度确实有点大,一开始肯定是困难重重。由于绑卡失败和场景缺失是很多用户遇到的实际问题,因此能够引发不少读者的共鸣。

角度六:Apple Pay吐槽

吐槽永远是最欢乐的部分,一个话题没有成片吐槽出现都不好意思说自己是个话题。关于Apple Pay的吐槽可多了去了。早上一打开朋友圈,豪华炫信用卡阵容就吓你一跳,更别说说Apple Pay仅支持iPhone6和6S以上有多伤人。于是各种吐槽段子迅速流传开来。与店员的搞笑对话又让人们意识到,Apple Pay这个词本身就已经是一种炫了。当然,吐槽即是戏谑,因此形象严肃的媒体一般不会大张旗鼓的传播。
